TANGRAM

Tangram is a dissection consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape (given only an outline or silhouette) using all seven pieces. I found this very difficult at times to put together but i think the creative outcome could be in the beginning stages of creating myself a new font.

REBUS
rebus is an allusional device that uses pictures to represent words or parts of words.
My attempt at the rebus using pictures

The rebus is quite a challenging exercise when drawing symbols for long or difficult words . Number 1& 2: my first and last name. Number 3: Smashing Pumpkins.
Number 4: DickSmiths.

FREE PUBLIC ART PROJECT

The brief behind this subject was to come up with a relevant cause and action. A group project was then underway discussing issues that face public art here in Brisbane. We decided to collaborate on poster designs and logo's that could be put out into the big bright world that possibly could change the councils view and the publics view on changing their attitude towards public art in the environment. The council are continually painting over work that i believe brightens up and benefits the city. There is a difference between tagging and art and with this cause we are trying to change the views on what is true art and what isn't.

NEWS ARTICLE FROM COURIER MAIL

This article I read in the Courier Mail about graffiti vandals was so relevant to our groups cause to change the view on public street art. So i decided to do my bit writing my response to the editor hoping the paper to publish my say. I'm so sick of the cancel crying about this subject, it really pissed me off. So underneath this is my response.

Hi Courier mail,

In my response to (time to can grafitti vandals), I'm really over the council crying over this inevitable circumstance. A shift of attitude is required on this subject.
Queensland is a little behind the eightball and should follow in Melbourne's footsteps and appreciate urban art. Don't get me wrong a tag is totally different than a piece of work that is beautifully executed. There is so much talent thriving in Brisbane by up and coming artists.
An example of ignorance was the piece by Anthony Lister that was wrongly painted over in West End. What an absolute disgrace! Not only is the artist from Brisbane but he is now a world renowned artist who is more appreciated in other countries than his own. Shame on you Brisbane.
I am a working artist and have an appreciation of art on urban surroundings. Who wants to look at ugly bland paint the council has painted over than a original piece of somebody's work?
The council should open their eyes and see this is a cry for help. Artists are waiting to be heard.
Instead of always fighting the problem the council needs do the opposite, put all that wasted $5.5 million on paint you spend covering up urban art into something creative and useful!  Painting over and over it again is not working for you now and it never will. Fund more creative spaces around the city for artists like billboards to paint on in the environment around the city, studio meeting places where artists can collaborate, mingle and work on exhibitions together. This would be a great incentive for artists to steer to these places more so than the streets. In some countries like Norway, artists are actually supported and paid a wage to be an artist but this would never happen here. Definitely something needs to change like everyone's attitude and appreciation on the subject. Painting on walls is better than committing other crimes right? The last thing I would like to say is that the street art movement has been a powerful one that keeps growing and moving forward changing people opinions about politics, war and the world. If nothing changes I might see what nice mural I can paint up somewhere.

Blank spaces refurbished

Ideas for action started to take place when we hit the streets in search for blank canvases around the city that would benefit from an creative mural that could be executed.
We took photos of blank walls that cried out for attention smothered by the urban landscape. The example artwork photo shopped onto the wall underneath this paragraph shows what a little colour can do to this bleak construction site that nails up a perimeter of blank walls made from ply board. Walls are usually up for 6 months to a year while they complete the building. These little things can brighten up a city while construction is waiting to be completed. Why not give an artist some work to make these areas engaging through the process. Everything is impermanent so even if the artwork lasts just for a year than is stripped down it has given that area colour and meaning for that point of time just like a life that is here and gone the next.

HUMPTY DUMPTY

This exercise was to create a scenario for Humpty Dumpty using only the symbols that were given. The symbols were to tell the story in your own style.

ROAD SIGN EXERCISE

This exercise was to produce hand drawn symbols that relate to the text given.

IGGY POP PIXEL GRID

The pixel grid was a tonal exercise. We had to choose a popular famous icon that was interesting to us. I chose Iggy pop as i think he's quite intriguing and strange icon thats stands out to me in the music industry. His strong weathered facial features and hard lived body asks to draw attention.
